Q: What words of advice on dieting and exercise do you have for women who are now in your shoes?
A: Here are a few tips:
1. More than half the battle is physically getting yourself to the gym. Once you're there, you're likely to put in the exercise. One rule I have for myself is that if I plan to go to the gym in the evening after work, I MUST go directly to the gym from the office. I know if I go home first, I will never motivate to get to the gym. I will always find some excuse not to go. Always remember that it feels great when you are done with your workout. Sometimes it's hard to envision it before and during the workout itself, but it is such a great feeling when you are done. The energy you gain from it is great.
2. Being patient and persistent definitely pays off.
3. Know when to take a break. It's good to push yourself, but it's OK to take a break when you need it.
4. Make exercise part of your daily routine, like brushing your teeth. The more you do it, the more it becomes just part of your life, not something you loathe.
5. Write it down. Sometimes it can feel like you worked out a lot, but when you actually write down how many cardio and strength workouts you have done, you can track and measure your progress (or lack of it) over time.
