Gabby was born in California. Her mother was from Long Island and her father was from Trinidad. Sadly, he died when Gabby was just 5 years old. She grew up on St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands and didn't take up volleyball until she and her mother moved to St. Petersburg, Fla., when Gabby was in the 11th grade. Gabby quickly excelled at the sport and won an athletic scholarship to Florida State University, where her prowess on the volleyball court is legendary.
Gabby turned pro in 1989. She led the Women's Beach Volleyball League in kills for four years in a row, from 1993 until 1996. In addition, Gabby was WBVL's Offensive Player of the Year in 1994-95 and the league's blocks leader in 1993. "I enjoy getting the ball to go exactly where I want it, at the speed I want it to go," says Gabby. Gabby also played in the 1999-2000 Olympic Challenge Series and the 1999-2000 FIVB Beach Volleyball World.
Gabby began modeling as a college student and continued to model throughout her professional volleyball career. In 1997, she appeared on the cover of
Women's Sport & Fitness magazine's 20 Most Influential Women in Sports issue. Regarding their choice of Gabby for that issue's cover, the magazine's editor wrote: "I believe she represents, finally, the answer to all the image-questing pendulum swinging of the decades gone by. Who is the female athlete? She is everything once thought to be an inherent contradiction. She is strong and beautiful, sweaty and feminine, tough and ladylike."
Since retiring from the pro volleyball circuit, model-athlete Gabby has continued her "cross-training" lifestyle as an author, actress, shoe designer and television host. As host of FitTV's
Insider Training, Gabby takes you behind the scenes and gives you an inside look at what makes athletes ultra-competitive, from their exercise regimens, to the foods they eat, and the mental/spiritual disciplines they practice.
