Reunion Story
Nurturing your Body, Mind and Spirit at Every Age

Living Well in Your 20s

In your 20s, you develop habits and skills that are yours for life. Just as you save money for retirement, you should make frequent investments in yourself!

Mind

  • Get smart. Ask about training courses offered by your employer. Many companies offer reimbursement for classes you take that can help you perform job tasks better.
  • Find yourself. Take diagnostic tests like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator to find out more about your preferences and make you a more effective communicator.
  • Open your eyes. Sample the world around you in a broad way. Use your free time to visit friends in other parts of your city or country.

Body

  • Bone up. Get plenty of calcium. Doctors refer to a process by which the body builds a "calcium bank" until you are 30 years old from which you'll make calcium withdrawals for the remainder of your life. Make sure you get enough calcium; many doctors recommend 1,000-1,200 milligrams a day for women in their 20s.
  • Build exercise fundamentals. Organize your life so you get enough cardio, strength and flexibility exercises each week. The USDA recommends that adults get 30 minutes of cardio exercise five days per week. You can get cardio from running, the elliptical machine, bicycling or sports like tennis.
  • Mix it up. Join different activities to drive your interest and keep exercising in new ways. Check out cardio kickboxing, capoiera, swing dancing or learning a new sport like cycling or tennis.
  • Find a friend. Find workout buddies. Make appointments to exercise or play sports with friends, colleagues, or your partner.

Spirit

  • Build your "tribe." For many people in their 20s, a group of close friends in your city or town becomes almost as close as family. Make an effort to get to know people of a variety of ages and backgrounds through your church or house of worship, volunteer activities or community action groups.
  • Focus on family. As you reach your 20s your relationships with parents and siblings change and grow. When you reach adulthood you establish patterns of communication and nurture you’ll keep for many years. Prioritize these relationships.
  • Get out. Dedicate time to the outdoors, regardless of season. Develop a gardening habit, join a conservation group or organize a hike.
